Before landing on this article I'm sure you've been browsing the web trying to find a solution to this problem. I feel your pain, that was me before finding a solution to this problem. It was frustrating having no guidance from Apple but I figured it out.
Before we get started, with this method you will be able to switch your Mac aspect ratio from 16:10 to 16:9 and you will also be able to switch your non-Apple monitor from 16:9 to 16:10. I am personally using this service and it works flawlessly.
After looking for solutions everywhere I finally found one that works and doesn't damage your Mac in the process. The software is called SwitchResX, it is the only viable solution I could find and it requires a one-time payment of $16 for lifetime access. If you are unsure about this service, they do offer a 10-day trial. I would like to mention that I am not affiliated with this service and will not be receiving any compensation for advertising their product.
Step 1: Trial Version
Make your way over to SwitchResX and click on the "download" tab shown below.
Once in the "download" tab click the little download link as shown below to download the trial version of the software.
Step 2: Buying a License
From the home page click on the "buy" tab shown below.
Once inside the "buy" tab go through the process of purchasing the "SwitchResX Single user license".
Step 3: Downloading the full version
Once receiving the username and license key (serial number) over email go ahead and download the full version by clicking on this computer icon as shown below. (Yes they need to update their website)
Step 4: Change Aspect Ratio
Go ahead and open the application by searching for it or going to "System Preferences" (should appear at the bottom in system preferences).
Once the application is open click "Launch Daemon" as shown below.
After clicking "Launch Daemon" the icon as shown below should appear in the tool bar at the top of your screen. Click it and choose your aspect ratio for there.
If you have two displays connected just hover over the device you're interested in adjusting to get the aspect ratio options.
